“The idea of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) in Indonesia was initially a dream. But now, this dream will soon become reality, because over the past two decades, central government and DKI Jakarta Province Administration have put special efforts to build a concept of MRT system as an efficient, convenient, and eco-friendly public transportation mode,” DKI Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said. “As these preparations works are being carried out, I hope that Jakarta residents will soon enjoy MRT Jakarta service. I have instructed PT MRT Jakarta to stay on the target to operate MRT Jakarta by the end of 2016. Therefore, I asked PT MRT Jakarta to make efficiency by distributing the work loads into several packets, so that the target becomes more achievable,” he added.

The launch took place at the Lebak Bulus Stadium, South Jakarta. In the future, this location will serve as MRT station as well as depot for the maintenance of MRT Jakarta trains. “Although we might see that the construction works for MRT will bring many impacts and changes, we hope that once MRT Jakarta operates, Jakarta residents will enjoy a safe, convenient, reliable and well-maintained public transportation,” Fauzi Bowo further explained.

The first phase of MRT Jakarta of South – North corridor will run over ± 15.7 Km line from Lebak Bulus to Bundaran HI. The whole construction planning for MRT Jakarta have been made through thorough and comprehensive studies by many related parties based on public participation, including in determining route, line and the most suitable line type for MRT Jakarta. “These choices were made by considering the least and the most minimum impacts of construction to the neighboring areas and residents,” Fauzi explained.

Regarding the progress reached so far, PT MRT Jakarta Technical and Project Director Rachmadi explained that the MRT Jakarta Phase I South – North corridor (Lebak Bulus – Bundaran HI) project is entering the tender bid to seek civil contractors. PT MRT Jakarta targets to sign contract with the contractors between October to November 2012. PT MRT Jakarta has also announced the pre-qualification tender for rolling stock suppliers. All of these works are carried out to expedite the operational target by the end of 2016.
