As a part of the effort to place the Safety and Risk Management that meets international standard for MRT Jakarta, PT MRT, on Sept 30th 2009, held a seminar on "Underground Tunnel Construction" and invites international expertise as guestspeakers, such as Olivier Vion - Executive Director, International Tunnelling Association, Claude Berenguier - Secretary General, International Tunnelling Association, Zaw Zaw Aye - Vice President, Thailand Underground and Tunnelling Group and Paul S Sumitro from Smart-Structures. “One of the goals of this seminar is as a medium to share and transfer knowledge on the underground tunnel construction, thus, similarities regarding basis, vision, and benchmarking could be gathered in building MRT Jakarta”, said Tribudi Rahardjo, CEO of PT MRT Jakarta in his speech when opening the event. Secretary General International Tunneling Association, Claude Berenguier, said that one important aspect in the construction is participation from all parties involved in Safety and Risk Management. client, designer, coordinator for Health and Safety, contractor, manufacture, professional organization, regulator and insurer hold important roles in Safety and Risk Management in the construction of underground tunnel. The first phase of construction is from Lebak Bulus to Dukuh Atas in which 4.5 km is going to be underground and then the next phase (Dukuh Atas - Kota) made the tunneling as the most important part in the Jakarta MRT construction. Tribudi also explained that the basic design of Jakarta MRT is expected to get started this year and the following year will be the bidding of the work on both elevated and underground work. “Through this program we expect we could learn and study the technical method from this unique construction and during construction is expected local contractors and consultants can participate in this project" " said Tribudi.
