This is a comment on a news report titled “MRT rolls ahead with power deal,” (The Jakarta Post, June 15)
Hopefully the MRT management will be an efficient organization once it is open to the public seven years from now. Creating transportation for the benefit of the public also means providing cleanliness, safety and good customer service for the entire MRT system. The need to adopt similar disciplinary methods as neighboring Southeast Asian countries with extensive transportation system is beneficial. Since the busway started running, maintenance has been neglected.
Whoever oversees the busway’s operating performance in this country doesn’t really grasp the meaning of the following concepts: Responsibility for the public welfare, attention to detail, taking responsibility for things that go wrong and room for improvement. We, the people, wish the MRT was safe and kept in a clean, satisfactory condition.
Now, is it really too much to ask that a modern rapid transit system run efficiently, alleviate congestion in the city, and eventually become a source of pride in this country?
